Bloody Caesar Drink

The Bloody Caesar (also known as the Caesar Drink) is a variation of the Classic Bloody Mary that uses Clamato juice in place of tomato juice. Popular in Canada, this drink is made with Clamato juice, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce and prepared horseradish. Half the fun is garnishing your drink, so go wild.

Bloody Caesar Ingredients

  • Vodka – Choose a quality, unflavored vodka. 
  • Clamato Juice – The big distinction in this recipe is using Clamato juice instead of tomato juice. 
  • Worcestershire sauce – A savory sauce often used in grilling and in Bloody Mary recipes. 
  • Hot Sauce – Such as Tabasco sauce, Cholula or Tapatio.
  • Horseradish – Choose prepared horseradish, not horseradish sauce. 
  • Garnishes – Bloody Caesars are all about the garnish. You can mix and match ideas. A few of our favorites include a fresh celery stalk, tomatoes, pickle spears, green olives, lime wedge, jalapeño slices, asparagus, cocktail onions or fresh rosemary or cilantro. You can also include items like cheese, salami or shrimp. The more, the merrier!

The best glassware to serve a Bloody Maria in is any type of tall drinking glass such as a collins glass or a pint glass. I used these wooden garnish picks to create a fun tomato garnish.

Instructions

In a cocktail shaker with ice, combine vodka, Clamato juice, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce and horseradish.

Shake for 10-15 seconds until well chilled. 

Strain and pour into a cocktail glass with fresh ice. 

Garnish with celery, olives, bacon, or whatever your heart desires!

Tips for Making

  • Variations – Similar to the Bloody Mary, you can swap spirits interchangeably. Try a Tequila Caesar, a Gin Caesar or Bourbon Caesar.
  • Orange Juice – Some recipes swear by adding a splash of orange juice to your recipe. I haven’t tried this yet, but it sounds interesting for a bit of sweet and savory flavor.
  • Salted Rim – Add a salted rim if you want a little extra. Try our Margarita Salt recipe next time you want to do salt-rimmed glasses.  
  • Optional Ingredients – If you want to add a little zing to your cocktail, add a squeeze of lime juice. If you want to enhance the savory flavor, add a pinch of garlic powder, celery salt or black pepper to your cocktail shaker.
  • Clam Juice – Many variations of this recipe dating back to the 1950s call for clam juice. We’ve also heard of recipes including pickle juice—I’d love to try that!
