Waffle Recipe

Do It Know

This homemade waffle recipe is the ultimate breakfast. Slightly crispy on the outside with a soft, fluffy interior and plenty of flavor these waffles are everything waffles should be. If you love our homemade pancakes you must try these next!

What is the difference between waffle and pancake batter? Not much, to be honest. You often can use them interchangeably, like when you use a mix (think Bisquick). But, this waffle recipe adds a little more fat, oil, to the batter to help create that crispy exterior. It’s the prefect vehicle for maple syrup!

Waffle Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour
  • Brown sugar
  • Baking powder
  • Salt
  • Milk
  • Oil
  • Egg
  • Vanilla extract

I use cooking oil spray for the waffle iron, although many waffle irons really don’t need any oil added. You will also want some butter and maple syrup for serving.

Directions

In a medium size mixing bowl stir together the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.

Now add the wet ingredients: milk, oil, egg, and vanilla extract. Stir these in until wet batter forms.

Heat your waffle iron according to the directions. When ready add 1/4 cup batter (or more or less depending on your size waffle iron) and cook until done. My waffle iron has a green light that lights up when the waffle is done, but I usually add another 30 seconds on to this for a crispy exterior.

Serve warm with butter and maple syrup.

Tips and Substitutions

  • You can use granulated white sugar instead of brown sugar if needed. I like the flavor brown sugar adds, but white sugar is perfectly fine too.
  • I tend to use canola or vegetable oil but any liquid cooking oil will work. If your oil has a strong flavor, like some olive oils and coconut oil, this will impart that flavor to your waffles.
  • You can add 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice to add more flavor to this recipe.
  • Waffle irons can vary quite a bit in size and how hot they get, so you will need to read the instructions of yours and experiment to get the prefect cook time.
